James Ibori Quagmire

After the release of former governor of delta state James Ibori, there was a beehive in delta state celebrating his return to the mainstream society and a lot of controversies have being adduced. Before this incident, it is no longer news Nigerians have a dearth of character. It is no surprise Donald Trump during his campaign said a lot of things about how we treat corrupt politicians.

If We Are Not Humans; What Are We?

I was with a friend the other day in the suburb of Lagos, we got into a commercial vehicle and took off, unknowingly that the driver didn't count the number of passengers that alighted at the bus-stop and the ones that came in, so he just said in general " Owo mi da" to those who just came in. Everybody else paid except for a lady by my side, who came in together with me. When I asked for her fare, she simply told me she has paid the driver. I have being there with her all the while and I know she didn't give him a dime and didn't even make a pass at him to indicate she is familiar with the driver. and that was how she rode on a free bus to her destination.

Please, all PHC resident: Have you all noticed  that thick black soothes are all over Portharcourt - even inside the homes- the sole of your feet is very black and we inhale quantities everyday. Early in the morning your cars are all covered with the same thick soothes.  Nobody seem to be saying anything about it.  Please, my people, what is going on? Let's push this until it gets to the appropriate quarters for answers and solutions

A Paradox Of Value

Image
A nation that will always get out of doldrums will always invest massively in human capacity and education of the young ones.Education has always being the key to success ,that’s what our parents told us decades ago,but as it stands today, parents are having a rethink on this key of a success thing of education ! This has been indicated over the way government and corporate organization treat education with disdain and levity. Nigeria needs to fund the education sector to provide human capital to develop other sectors of the economy. How can Nigeria become one of the best 20 economies in the world by 2020 Buhari’s administration has shown a disdain for education . 2016 budget earmarked a paltry amount for this crucial sector. From N306.3bn in 2011, to N400.15bn in 2012, to N426.53bn in 2013, to N493bn in 2014, to 492bn in 2015, to N369bn in 2016, Nigeria’s most important sector remains underfunded. While this budget is for the federal level alone, it is still less t

Still On The Hike On Data Prices

I keep saying it , that the government of this country does not want its citizenry to be learned. If not, how can one really explain the hike on data prices when the NCC should be looking for ways to reduce it. They have frustrated education to the extent that the common man can no longer send their kids to school, now they want to suppress our right to freedom of association using the internet since they could not pass the social media bill.  The effect of the hike would have been disastrous , owing to the fact that a lot of our libraries are either dilapidated or struggling to function properly. Where do we go to read since it was said Nigerians no longer read books; the internet of course. So what happens if their is a hike on prices of data? The common man is blinded, and like a leper he is lead to fall into a deep hole he will not be able to return. This is the reason everybody should take to the street and protest for the reduction of data price, because in the modern world

Why MMM Will Fail

MMM  like many ponzi and pyramid schemes, thrive on participants paying into a single account from where the scheme is impacted and fraud takes places. But since changing to the current format of providing help (PH) and getting help(GH),  MMM have produced a model that is too good to stand the test of time. Also with the 30% interest received for participant who provided help in 30days is mouth watering. People like me have always tried to find where the 30% interest is coming from, only to be told it stirs from traffic to the site, monetized  MMM videos on youtube, and the use of google products by guilders etc. This makes the interest MMM is paying " free money ."  The business model is very good, i mean so good that will draw a lot of people to withdraw their money in the bank and put them in MMM. No wonder the precocious climb in the past year for MMM, already one of the most visited site in Nigeria in the past 12 months. Remember i said the model is so good, yes

8 Reasons Business Degree Is Not A Requiste For Success In Business

Business degrees are hot, but you might want to reconsider your decision. Here are eight reasons why you should not major in business : 1. Business majors don't learn much in business school. That's one of the bombshell conclusions of Academically Adrift , a new blockbuster bestseller that suggests that 45% of university students don't learn much of anything in their first two years of college, while more than one out of three students graduate with no improvement in writing and analytical skills. Among the students who learn the least in college are social work, education and business majors . In contrast, the researchers found that students majoring in the humanities, social sciences, hard sciences and math do relatively well. 2. You won't make as much money as you think. If you're interested in making tons of money, here's a wake-up call: in the latest university degree salary survey is that , business is NOT one of the best-paying univer

FG Moves To Shut Down MMM Operations In Nigeria

The Federal Government of Nigeria has initiated moves to shut down MMM operations in Nigeria. Managing director of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) Alhaji Umaru Ibrahim, said regulators have set up a committee to stem the nefarious activities of the fraudsters across the country. ''I wish to sound a word of caution to members of the public on the activities of illegal fund managers, otherwise known as Wonder Banks. It is worrisome to note that despite repeated advice, many unsuspecting members of the public are still falling victims to the mouth-watering interest being offered by these illegal fund managers'' Members of the public are therefore advised to patronize only banking institutions that display the NDIC sticker: 'Insured By NDIC' in their banking halls or entrances. ''However, the regulatory authorities have set up an inter-agency committee under the Financial Services Regulatory Co-ordinating Committee (FRSCC) to st

Beware Before You Use Public Wifi

Is public Wi-Fi safe? The short answer: Hell, no. But if you must use the free wireless at your hotel or the satellite office (i.e., Starbucks), here are some precautions you should take. Keep it impersonal. Never online-bank via public wi-fi. Obvious, right? But you shouldn’t even check email -- that can give hackers access to a trove of personal info. This applies even to secure websites, those with https (hypertext transfer protocol secure) in the URL. “Public hotspots are susceptible to man-in-the-middle attacks” -- where the hacker intercepts communications -- “which will strip out the ‘secure’ part of https,” warns David Lee, a product manager for mobile at security software company Norton. Beware fake networks. Check the network name with the staff of wherever you’re working. “You might see ‘Free-Starbucks-wifi,’ but this could easily be a fake,” says Jérôme Segura, a lead malware intelligence analyst at Internet security software maker Malwarebytes. You’d be able

Why Would Public School In Lagos Be Rated High

Sesan Olufowobi The Executive Chairman of the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board, Dr Ganiyu Sopeyin, says public schools have been showing greater quality. He explained that statistics available showed that the level of education in the state was improving, adding that public schools in the state would continue to achieve competitive advantage. A statement on Sunday said Sopeyin spoke after public primary school pupils in Lagos (Team Lagos) came third at the 56th Independence Anniversary Inter-SUBEB Schools Debate Championship in Minna, Niger State. At the event, which was organized by the Universal Basic Education Commission, in collaboration with the President’s Schools Debate Nigeria, Sopeyin also emerged the Best Performing SUBEB Chairman in the South-West. The Lagos SUBEB boss said, “Based on empirical statistics available, the level of education in the state is improving with the provision of education facilities, teachers’ welfare and training, construction and reh

Opportunity Or Passion,Which Do You Prefer?

In starting out on our career path alot of us choose opportunity over passion. But sometimes it does ends up being the other way round after a couple of years on the sidelines. The circle always start with being admitted to study a course you didn't apply for because you couldn't attain the cut-off mark of the course after your heart. Friends will always advice you to go for what is readily available, instead of you waiting  longer years to get your dream course; because as they readily say "it doesn't matter what you read in Nigeria, it is the paper and connection that does." No wonder we have all seen microbiologist as on-air-personalities, lawyers working in a bank counters, ministers being assigned roles they are not fit for. The cycle keep repeating itself. Passion starts to develop when after accepting your admission status in the university, you find out that you are not as intrigued to study the course given to you. Some people at this point quit, but

DSS, Buhari- Were They Right This Time?

The funny thing about democracy is that you can actually be guilty hiding under the ambit of the law. When your cover is blown, you cry foul and aim to be the victim of abuse of democratic process. Have you ever wondered why nobody cares about due process when it comes to charging a common criminal, and cry foul when Federal Judges who are supposed to uphold our political institutions are charged with corruption? Did the DSS have a search warrant to invade the judges homes at that time and is it constitutional as well as, did they come with a search warrant? According to them they did, and they are backed by law, as you can make a search  at anytime of the day provided the search warrant was signed by a judge, in this case the CJN. But an arrest can only be made from 6:00am -6:00pm at any given day. So why did they make the arrest at that hour and what did they find that e encouraged them to make an arrest at that time of the night, have to be proven in court.   Is it a pol

Strike Looms In Anambra

Enyim Enyim AWKA—The celebrated success in the security and crime sector of Anambra State by Governor Willie Obiano is currently under threat as the staff of the state vigilance services have vowed to embark on strike over non-payment of their two months salary arrears. Speaking to reporters, yesterday, in Awka, the workers said they were being owed August and September salaries and insisted they would go on strike if the state government failed to pay them any time soon. According to one of the officials who gave his name as Mr. Maxwell Nwoye, “we have done our best in ensuring safety of lives and property in Anambra State and everybody knows that the governor has zero tolerance for crime and all forms of brigandage. Some of us have died, some are hospitalised as a result of fighting crime, yet the authorities concerned have not found us worthy to be paid our entitlements. “Our members are not happy at all and we also learnt that the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security has

Local Government And Public Primary Education In Nigeria

Education has always being at the forefront of most government of the worlds economic plans, as well as Nigerias. But over the years most foreign countries have allocated as much as 20% of their budgetary allocation for the year to education. Same cannot be said of Nigeria, who contributes a paltry 5% to its education sector and a further 2% petroleum tax from oil companies to textiary institutions in the country. That is a topic for another day. The foundation of basic education has always been the primary school sector, where children are inculcated into the rudiments of intensive learning. Giving the local government primary responsibility of taking care of  public primary school is a good development, but over the years that function has being abused. From the late payment of salaries and the accumulation of unpaid salaries and bonuses, coupled with the incessant change of adminstration within the local government has all but deter the performance of most public primary school

Do We Still Have Heroes In Nigeria-Post Independence?

Excerpts from this years independence celebrations have got me wondering if we really still have heroes in our beloved country Nigeria. I got into a conversation with my father recently, he is an octogenarian and pretty vast in his knowledge of events back in the 60s till date.  He said " Nigeria wouldnt have been what it is now if not for heroes like Ahmadu Bello, Nnamdi Azikiwe(zik of Africa), Obafemi Awolowo, Chief Anthony Enahoro etc. People who put national interest ahead of personal interest, people who rallied the call for a united Nigeria and freed us from the strong grip of colonialism."  Of course one cannot argue with stories like this, but after independence we have  really shot ourselves on the foot with our choice of leadership, starting with the millitary regime and the countless coup. In recent times political elections havent being really free and fair and government fiscal and monetary policies havent been quite in line with each other.  With the count

Is The Treasury Single Account Really The Cause Of Our Recession-Part one?

Yesterday i came across this statement from distinguished senators of our federal republic about the TSA(Treasury Single Account). According to theses  Senators Bassey Akpan (PDP Akwa Ibom North East), Samuel Anyanwu (PDP Imo East) and Mao Ohuabunwa (PDP Abia North), called for a re-think by the federal government on the implementation of the TSA as, according to them, it is one the factors that triggered the recession. He said between August and November last year, as a result of the implementation of the policy, about N1.8 trillion was withdrawn from the banking system, which increased to N2.8 trillion in January this year and N3.4 trillion now , leading to drastic reduction in lending capacities of the commercial banks with attendant effect on the country’s economy.  Before we delve further, let us re-visit what the TSA is all bout before considering how much it might have effected the recession we are currently facing. This piece will be in two parts. 1. TSA refers to Treasu

The Judiciary As A Scapegoat

When we critically look at the recent judgments of our Judicial courts, one is poised to ask; why the contradicting judgement from the Sheriff/Makarfi PDP chairmanship lead judgement, to Ikpeazu/Ogah led battle for the Abia State Governorship seat unto Giwa/Pinnick tussle for the NFF presidency?  The answer cannot be far fetched. They are the scapegoats of the politicking that goes on in the executive and legislative arm of government. Come to think of it, are they not the only arm that was not duly elected by the electorate? Every other arm was elected by the citizenry, why not the Judiciary? Well, lawyers will say theirs is a defined field where integrity is the order of business. Why does it still hold that a law degree is a prerequisite for astute foray into politics?  Forgive my questions, am not a lawyer. I just want to be enlightened. The NUJ recommends qualified individuals to the president to appoint and most times these appointments are politically motivated by party aff
