Strike Looms In Anambra


Enyim Enyim AWKA—The celebrated success in the security and crime sector of Anambra State by Governor Willie Obiano is currently under threat as the staff of the state vigilance services have vowed to embark on strike over non-payment of their two months salary arrears. Speaking to reporters, yesterday, in Awka, the workers said they were being owed August and September salaries and insisted they would go on strike if the state government failed to pay them any time soon. According to one of the officials who gave his name as Mr. Maxwell Nwoye, “we have done our best in ensuring safety of lives and property in Anambra State and everybody knows that the governor has zero tolerance for crime and all forms of brigandage. Some of us have died, some are hospitalised as a result of fighting crime, yet the authorities concerned have not found us worthy to be paid our entitlements. “Our members are not happy at all and we also learnt that the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security has been made handicapped by one committee that was set up by government.” Also speaking, Mr. Calistus Okeke lamented that the vigilance services are aware that the principal secretary to the governor, Mr. Willie Nwokoye has since signed for the payment of their salaries, wondering why it has not been effected since August. “We have entered the ember month and between September and December there is always security challenges due to the festive seasons. Already, the vigilante groups in the state have commenced skeletal operations as a prelude to the full blown strike that is expected to take off by the middle of this month. Efforts to get reactions from relevant authorities on security proved abortive as at the time of this report.. “ “The police, department of State Security and Civil Defence cannot do it alone. We operate inside the community and when we discover security flash points we take actions and then link up with the police and other operatives”. “So they should pay us our money in the interest of peace and security in Anambra sate.
