FG Challenge In Delivering South-East By 2019

Just recently, a mandate was placed on the South-East geo-political zone of the APC, to deliver the whole of that zone to the ruling APC lead government headed by President Muhammadu Buhari, when the 2019 elections kicks-off. If we can recall, during the 2015 elections, the incumbent President lost woefully in the said zone. In states like Imo, Ebonyi, Anambra, Enugu, Abia States. In fact, it was a landslide victory for the ousted former President Ebele Goodluck Jonathan.

While it is not mission impossible for the ruling government, it is a herculean task to achieve. The first thing about convincing people to vote for you in politics is to give them a mindset to adopt if they are not necessarily changing theirs. The average easterner has a strong disdain for the political party called "APC." While much of it can be attributed to the stronghold of PDP in that region, it did the Apc no good that a bulk of its members and BOT are from the north and the South-West.

A country with over 250 ethnic group, and a government who preach about federal character, one Nigeria and total inclusion of every region of Nigeria in its manifesto, cannot be said to be fair in its exclusion of the South-East in the affairs of Nigeria. Are we now surprised that same region is seeking self-determination away from Nigeria?

Under the past government, the people of the South-West were thought to have been excluded from the government of President Goodluck Jonathan and they showed their dismay during the 2015 elections by voting the incumbent president. Will it come as a surprise that the South-East will also seek to vote out these government as well?

The real question should rather be, what has the APC government done for the South-East to warrant their vote?  He has never visited the region since assuming power, In fact, he has been quoted as saying " will he leave the 95% that voted for him and concentrate on the 5% that didn't?"  The recent visit by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo was just to appease the militants in the region and that of the South-South.

If the APC government is serious about taking votes for themselves come the general elections in Nigeria 2019, it needs to start showing real proof the current government is working in the region. As well as give the South-East a glimmer of hope that the ultimate seat of government will one day be chaired by a Man from the South-East.

It is no longer news the region has been greatly marginalized, considering its importance to Nigeria and being one of the three major languages spoken in the country. Yet, it has not produced a Nigerian President since 1966! let us call a spade a spade and not just an agricultural tool. The country needs a restructuring of leadership.
