Social Media And Cheating
Social media is the buzz of the 21st century, while cheating is as old as man himself, together they are both among the current vibe the world is facing right now.
Cheating on its own have never being so rampant in any generation than in this generation. In fact, the rate of divorce has gone higher in this past year in Nigeria alone. And most of these cases are closely related to the use of social media.
Nkiru a 26 year old mother of two narrated her story " That her problem started when she went through her husbands phone and checked his inboxes, that was how she got to know about her husbands infidelity with as much as four women."
Her story is not different from a lot of other partners in relationships. Social media that was designed to bring us closer, have being abused and misused for other personal and self gratifying interest.
Some people would not want to link social media to cheating, owning to the fact that; a cheat is a cheat, social media or not. But before we go on, is cheating actually just about having sexual intercourse or the stray of attention from your present partner to someone or something else.
A man who pays more attention to his work, is also cheating, being addicted to chatting with friends on social media and not paying attention to the present environment of your partner is also another form of cheating, exchanging love messages and heartfelt gratitude to members of social media groups, can be termed cheating.
The fact is, if it is taking the time and attention to be spent on your partner which he or she didn't approve, it is cheating. Most single gentlemen and ladies this days are into multiple partners because of the presence of social media in getting to hook up easily with different people from different works of life discreetly.
Another argument can be, why would you check your partners phone, is not a violation of his or her fundamental human right of privacy? I can clearly state here, that a new law should be enacted for the full disclosure of every partners password and social media profiles before and during marriage at all times. Whatever was deleted must be presented by the telecommunications companies as at when in need of it.
We cannot continue lying to ourselves. While social media has brought people together, it has also destroyed a lot of relationships.
