Southeast Nigeria Development Quagmire

Recently a bill for the establishment of the Southeast development commission was rejected by the house of representatives for carrying a divisive agenda. Sponsors of the bill maintain the law was intended to compensate the southeast aftermath of the civil war in 1970 as nothing has been done for the region since then, but pure neglect on the part of the FG. This bill helps to solve that problem and probably kill the increasing agitation of people of the southeast for their own sovereign state.

There are arguments for and against this said bill, but the major aspect I will consider first is that it is going to be funded by the federal government. This is not a welcome development at all.
I also want to ask a question before I continue on this topic. If every region in this country Nigeria gets a development commission, what is then the job of the states, the ministries, and government parastatals?

This only brings to the fore the incessant call for the restructuring of Nigeria. Following the rejection of a bill to establish the southeast development commission bill, it is now clear where the country headed; And that is disintegration.

The bill was rejected following the fact that it lacked merit, as it wasn't only the southeast that has suffered marginalization from the federal government over the years. The southeast and south representatives felt aggrieved as it was the only way for the federal government to set the records straight since the end of the Biafran war in 1970.

I always find the presidential system of government as a very liberal form of government, because the majority of the sponsors of the bill have their states also in the NDDC and those states also have governors who receive 13% derivation from the FG as an oil producing state.

So what have the billions given as allocations from the FG being used for apart from paying civil servant salaries in this states? Only the southeast governors can answer that. However, am only perturbed by the consistent wastage from the FG with only a fraction of its yearly budget implemented every year.

While the allocations for ministries have increased, the impact is yet to be felt on our roads, hospitals, schools, etc. So I get the agitation for the introduction of the southeast development commission, but truth be told other regions are suffering that same fate as well.

One of the arguments for this bill is that this commission if established will also help to quell the agitation for the sovereign state of Biafra and make the people of that region feel a sense of inclusiveness in the Buhari led government.
